Lyric:
My name’s Dave, I’m a proud trucker, and this is my story.
Early in April, I was haulin’ beef jerky I had just picked up out of Albuquerque
I was headed back home to the depot in Macon,GA.
The road was clear, and I was speedin’, ‘cause time with my sweetheart was what I was needin’.
I was aimin’ to get home early by almost a day.
Now, out in west Texas, eleven at night, I saw an awful peculiar sight:
It looked like a truck where the driver had disappeared.
I’d never seen a rig with an unmanned wheel. Was that a mirage, or was it for real?
But when you drive, it gets late...and things can get weird.
So I went to a truck stop, slept for an hour, then I walked to the building out back for a shower.
And I saw my old friend Hal. First time in a year.
I told Hal what I’d seen that night, and the fear I had that my mind wasn’t right.
Would he help me talk things through, to get my head clear?
The road is for machines and mud, but I’m a man, just flesh and blood;
Comin’ home is when the world seems right.
I’m pullin’ 18 tons of freight. I’m Macon-bound and I can’t wait
To reach my Daisy Sue and hold her tight.
Let’s put it in gear!
Awww, yeah.
My buddy said, “I've seen testing, Dave, from Yellowstone to Mammoth Cave.
"It’s nothing but trouble for truckers, and I know they ain't done.
"So I'm putting my lumbar support out to scrap, and I’d like to give you my gimme cap.
"They’re robots, Dave. This'll be my last run."
I continued my journey on I-40, and something else happened that you oughta know:
A test rig from Tesla came close and we traded some paint.
It almost forced me into the ditch. And it sure didn’t look like a beta-test glitch.
Coincidence? Hah! I’m thinking it ain’t.
The road is for machines and mud, but I’m a man, just flesh and blood
Comin’ home is when the world seems right.
I’m pullin’ 18 tons of freight. I’m Macon-bound and I can’t wait
To reach my Daisy Sue and hold her tight.
I pulled into Macon, unhitched my load, and parked in the gravel outside my abode.
Daisy was waitin’ there for me, by the “Welcome” mat.
She glanced at her shoes, lookin’ guilty as sin. Daisy, good woman, won't you let me come in?
"I'm sorry Dave,” she said, “but I can't do that."
Electrical whirring sounds came from the door. A metal arm lifted itself from the floor,
And a rubberized hand touched the waist of my sweet Georgia queen.
Out came a robot, shiny with science. He looked like a high-end kitchen appliance.
My Daisy had fallen in love with a thinking machine!
Chips and software call the shots now; roads’ll be for drivin’ bots now;
Old school highway cowboys lost the fight.
I’ll no longer live in Macon; this old’s trucker’s heart is breakin’
‘Cause a robot’s gonna hold my gal tonight.
I still can’t hardly believe it, but a robot’s gonna hold my gal tonight.
Dang!
