Sharpeville Massacre: History repeated itself on the 25th anniversary of one of South Africa's darkest days, as events marking the Sharpeville Massacre turned deadly.
On March 21, 1960, hundreds of Black South Africans protesting pass laws were gunned down by police. Initial reports suggested 69 demonstrators were killed when the group of 5,000 to 7,000 protesters reportedly began throwing stones at police. The interaction was widely disputed, as was the number of casualties, which was believed to be closer to 250.
As this March 21, 1985 report reveals, a quarter century after the massacre, police opened fire on more crowds in Sharpeville, killing another 17 Black South Africans after demonstrators reportedly marched on a White community and attacked police riot squad.
Today, the Sharpeville Massacre is remembered with a national holiday in order to honour those killed in one of the most gruesome examples of South Africa's strict apartheid laws.
