Plans have been put forward for a major restructuring of fire services across Tyneside and Wearside. The proposals include cuts of 70 posts and an end to 24-hour cover at some stations.

Fire service bosses say changes are driven by a need to save millions of pounds. The Fire Brigades Union says the proposals will compromise safety and says it will fight them.
